"Actually everything is going quite well," Elizabeth replied. "I've gained a brother in law and a niece in just over 6 weeks of holiday time." She laughed and put some more food into her mouth. "What about you? Anything new happening on your end?"

"What about you? Anything new happening on your end?" "Wow, that is a short time." She laughed and shook her head, "Nope, nothing new. Well aside from coming here of course. My brothers are still searching for that 'someone special'. I doubt they'll find anyone if they keep on playing around." She laughed and looked out at the students. "On the plus side it doesn't put any pressure on me to find anyone, being the youngest." |

"Yeah the same goes for me as well," Elizabeth said. "Well hopefully they won't find anyone until you are either happily with someone or married, because then you can laugh at them for being slow."

Kaiia heard two of the teachers discussing the possibility of being happily married one day. She glanced at them contemptuously. Try being married off to the highest bidder within a month of leaving school, she thought sourly. Not that she'd been unhappy with Damon; she'd actually loved him by the end. But it hadn't been her choice. True, she'd still been able to pursue her career, but with everything that was going on back then, their home life had been unsettled to say the least. And working at the ministry during those years - even in a department as far removed from controversy as Astronomical Inquiry - had been very stressful at times. She stabbed a piece of meat on her plate, and chewed it, barely tasting it.

Kildara nodded at Lily-Anne and turned back to her food. It just seemed to be upsetting her stomach even more so she pushed it away. She turned to look at the others, talking about marriage. She smiled as she looked down at the ring on her hand and smiled. She turned to the others. Did I show you?" she asked, holding out her hand so the ring glinted in the light. "James proposed." Smiling she turned to Kaiia who looked very down. "Kaiia, darling, what's up?" she asked concerned.

Kaiia looked up, meeting the headmistress's eyes challengingly.
"All this talk of living happily ever after is a little hard for a widow to take," she said silkily. She looked back down at her plate. She did love a nice awkward silence, especially if she'd caused it!

Kildara was gobsmacked for a moment. She smiled comfortingly at Kaiia. "I know what you mean love. I was the same after my first husband passed. The pain goes after a while." she soothed.

Kaiia's mouth twisted. She'd been trying to make her colleagues uncomfortable, not looking for pity. For some, perhaps it does get easier, she thought bleakly, not saying it aloud in case it looked like she was fishing for sympathy. Maybe if things had worked out differently in her last job...
She continued to eat, staring determinedly at her plate. At least the meat was cooked to her satisfaction, so rare it was barely warm in the middle. She just wanted to get the meal over, so she could climb the stairs to the top of the Astronomy tower, and leave her human form behind for a few hours.

Kildara looked almost shocked at Kaiia's reaction. She had been trying to make her collegue feel better, but she obviously didn't want to. Kildara shook her shoulders and turned back to her food and decided to try some more. When she felt like she was going to throw up again, she pushed her plate even further away and turned to the others.
