Introductory Astrononomy - Lesson #1

The look of horror on both Sam and Danika's faces were classic. They couldn't have a quiz, surely. Not in the first lesson. Not when they couldn't retain anything from the stupid textbook with all it's stupid names and titles and stupid stuff. When they realised no one else was reacting the way they were they relaxed. Maybe she was lieing. Hopefully she was joking.

Kaiia saw the look of horror on Danika's face replaced by relief as she came to the conclusion that the threat of a quiz was an idle one. There was no way she could resist tormenting the girl a little more...

She flicked her wand, and a pile of parchments floated round the room, distributing a copy to each student. On each was a list of questions:

1) What is an Astronomical Unit? (2 points)
2) How many constellations are there? (1 point)
3) what are the two largest constellations? (1 point)
4) describe the system used to label/identify stars within a constellation (2 points)
5) define the following (1 point per definition)
- ‘Grand Design’ spiral galaxy
- Elliptical galaxy
- Irregular galaxy
- Starburst galaxy
- Constellation
- Nebula
- Star cluster
- Comet
- Meteor
6) apart from the sun, which star is the closest to earth? (1 point)
7) list the eight phases of the moon (4 points)

She gave them a couple of seconds to let it sink in before relenting.

"That is your homework. It is due in one week." She glanced at the clock. "It's a little early, but we have covered all the material, and no-one seems to have any further questions. Class is dismissed."

Danika looked down at the page, utterly dumbstruck. What the? she thought. She looked up at Blackthorn and scowled. Not cool, she thought. SHe frowned at the paper, fixing it with a horrid glare. She was surprised, although, when it burst into flames. She jumped back slightly, it had been a long time since she'd set anything alight, just by looking at it, then waved her hand over it, causing the flames to subside and go out. She looked up at Blackthorn and smirked.
"It seems my homework doesn't like me. Can I have another sheet, or do I have to get it from someone else?" she said softly, smirking.

Sam looked down at the paper with a look of utter horror on his face. He jumped slightly when Danika caught fire, from nothing. He listened to her tone when she was talking to Blackthorn and shook his head. Blackthorn seemed like a teacher Danika wouldn't get away with a lot of things very easily.

Kaiia watched as Danika apparently set fire to her parchment. An interesting response. Was it possible that the girl was a Fire Elementalist? It would explain their instantly antagonistic reactions to one another, Kaiia being an Ice Elementalist. However, she wasn't going to let the incident pass without some comment.

"I'm afraid that little display of temper will cost you another two housepoints, Miss Peverell, and three for insolence. You're welcome to another parchment, but that would mean an additional five housepoints deducted. Unless you'd like to copy it down from the Announcement board, of course. It's up to you," she finished. She hadn't raised her voice in the slightest, but her tone was full of quiet menace.

Danika shrugged her shoulders casually. House points didn't mean a thing for her. She knew she'd make it up in other classes. But she knew her housemates would be really quite annoyed with her if she lost over ten points in one class.
"I'll just copy it off the board I guess," she said indifferently, shrugging her shoulders again.

Kaiia watched Danika, noting her casual response to losing house points. She would obviously have to come up with some form of punishment that Danika would actually mind. She'd need to observe her for a couple of classes and see what came up.

Bella jumped as she felt heat behind her and saw Danika had set her homework on fire. For a girl that was normally friends with teachers, Professor Blackthorn had touched a nerve and she couldn't help but smile. She copied down the notes before putting all her stuff away. "Sam I'll be in the library if you need me," she said giving him a smile before walking out of the classroom ignoring Andrew completely. She wanted to go and do her homework before she forgot about it plus it would help her forget about what Andrew had said.

Andrew was looking over the questions frustrated at himself when he caught a glimpse of a flash of light. He looked behind him to see Danika's homework on fire and turned back around. He heard Bella get up and say goodbye to Sam then leave. He sighed and after a few minutes stuck his things back in his pack and headed for the common room to study.
