Introductory Astronomy
Class #1
Time: Friday July 25th1
Duration: Until July 31st
Preparation: Please read Chapters 1 & 2 of the Astronomy Textbook. This will be a theory lesson. You are responsible for arranging your own observation sessions2
ooc:
1: You can start walking into the classroom anytime, but I'll try to start the lecture some time on Friday evening EDT (GMT -5)
2: I'm going to set up an Observation thread. Feel free to look at the stars at any time. I'll join you from time to time. Just seems like this will be more fun/flexible than having set times for star-gazing

Caitlin walked in and smiled at the teacher sitting once more front center. "Hello I'm Caitlin" she said gathering her stuff Professor Blackthorn glanced at the girl, then checked her class list. Caitlin... Caitlin... She looked up. "You don't appear to be on my class list. Are you sure you're registered in my class? What is your last name?" ooc: please fill out the sign up sheet so I know what time zone you're in  I assume that any students not on my list are potential snacks for my pet manticore...  |

"Lucas... ah yes, there you are." Kaiia put a check against her name. She tapped the name with her wand, then tapped an empty parchment twice, and Caitlin's student record appeared on the parchment. Kaiia liked to have her students' records handy. You never knew when they might come in useful.
"I commend your punctuality, Miss Lucas. Let us hope the rest of your classmates see fit to display similar courtesy."

Danika walked into the classroom followed closely by Sam, with whom she was having a very animated conversation about Quidditch. She stopped talking when she entered the classroom and turned a smile on the teacher.
"Hi Professor, I'm Danika Peverell," she said sweetly, choosing a seat next to Caitlin.
Sam walked into the classroom, talking animatedly with Danika but stopped as he entered. He sat next to Danika and smiled endearingly up at the Professor.
"Hey, I'm Sam Hearn," he said casually.

Sabrina walked into the astronomy classroom dripping wet. Peeves had been dropping water balloons in the corridor which she had to walk down. She quickly dried her clothes off and walked up to the Professor. "Hello Professor, I'm Isabella Peters," she said taking a seat in front of Sam.

Kaiia nodded in greeting as each of the students walked in. She glanced down at her lesson notes - not that she really needed them today. Lesson 1 of Introductory Astronomy was something she could have taught in her sleep. The subject matter was, to her, extremely basic. What made it interesting to teach was seeing the students react. Boredom was frequently a response; it didn't bother her, it was their right not to be interested, so long as they made a reasonable effort at their work, and didn't disrupt the class. Besides, one of the most satisfying moments was when a student - and there always seemed to be one in every year - suddenly fell in love with the subject.
Kaiia looked around the room, wondering if it would be one of those already here, waiting for class to commence.

Andrew walked into Astronomy and looked around he saw Bella sitting down and walked over toward her sitting down beside her. "You know, I wish they'd make it easier to get up here. My legs feel like rubber from all of this walking around." He looked at Bella and frowned, "What's wrong?"

Bella saw Andrew walk in and sighed as he sat down next to her. "Let's just say never come across Peeves when he's holding a whole bunch of water balloons." She frowned and held up her wet hair, "otherwise this happens. How are you anyways?"

Kaiia glanced at her watch, and decided it was time to start. She closed the door with a flick of her hand - she used her wand for most things, but she liked to stay in practice with the wandless magic. Just in case.
"Let's get started," she said.
She looked around the room, waiting until she had everyone's attention before she introduced herself.
"I am Professor Blackthorn," she told them. "I spent five years working at the Ministry of Magic, in the Department for Astronomical Studies. Following that, I taught at Durmstrang for a further five years." That in itself should let her students know that she wouldn't take any nonsense from them.
"Please put your textbooks back in your bags. I assume that everyone has already read the first two chapters, as directed," she continued. It was a statement, not a question. With the textbooks put away, if any of them had neglected the reading, she'd soon know. And it was unlikely that they would repeat the offense in future...
"So - who can tell me the difference between a constellation and an asterism?" she asked.

Isabella put her textbook away before raising her hand immediately. "Professor, Asterisms are smaller groupings of well known stars. Constellations on the other hand are sets of stars that have been identified as a specific grouping as to how they look like to people looking at them on earth. Although on earth a constellation may appear to have stars close together, they may actually be quite some distant apart."

"A very good explanation, Miss Peters. Two points to Ravenclaw. Asterisms are frequently part of a larger constellation, although they can also be made up of stars from more that one constellation. Can you give me an example of a well-known asterism?"

Danika looked over at Sam and they both put their books away. They listened to Blackthorn and looked at each other again. They both shrugged their shoulders sheepishly. They were only in the classto fill up their timetables. They looked at Bella, both of them with their mouths open. They'd read the book ... but she just recited it!
