Rabastan sensed Sara's hesitation, but he was sure that once they sat down, and started talking, he could convince her that they had a future together. And perhaps - his body started to react just at the possibility - she might spend the night with him. He opened the door of the pub for Sara, and followed her in. Once they were seated, and Rab had ordered drinks, he reached across the table and took Sara's hand. "There's still a chance for us, I know it," he told her, looking into her eyes. "Surely you feel it." Sara walked through the door and sat herself at a table. He followed, ordered some drinks, then looked at her. When he took her hand, her lip went between her teeth again, and she looked pained as he spoke. How could she do this? Break it to him slowly. "Rab - I" she began, not really know how to say it. "Sure, there may be. But, not right now. I-I'm not equipped to deal with this. My emotional range isn't as diverse as a normal person. When we were in the Ministry, that was the first time in my life I'd felt a tear on my cheek. I'm slowly changing as I get older, but - but I don't know if I can do this right now." The drinks came then, and she just looked at hers, unable to work out whether she'd be welcome to drink hers.

Rabastan felt a little pang as he listened to Sara. She was pushing him away again. But... perhaps not as definitely as she had before. She seemed to be giving him a reason to hope that one day, she would welcome him into her life. Trying to make sense of the mixture of hope and despair he was feeling, he squeezed her hand gently. "I'll give you all the time you need," he promised her. He picked up his drink, pushing hers towards her a little.

Sara felt his hand tighten around hers, and she couldn't help the slight smile that flittered across her face. He pushed her drink towars her, and she took it, raising to her lips, feeling the comforting liquid slide down her throat. She sighed softly. That was exactly what she needed.

Rab watched as Sara downed her drink. The slight smile he'd seen as he held her hand, and the little sigh she'd given sent his heart beating just a little faster. She had said she didn't want him, but it seemed that every time he'd touched her, she'd responded. Perhaps all she needed was to feel his kiss once more, maybe she'd remember how good it had been between them.
Impulsively, Rabastan leaned across the table, lifted her face to his and kissed her, gently but deeply, putting all his feelings into it.

Sara didn't know what was going on until their lips met. She responded to the kiss, melting into it. Then, she abruptly pulled away, shaking her head, shocked with all of it. "I-I..." she stammered. "Rab, don't do this. I-You're not making this any easier. I just told you I couldn't do this. I can't do this. Not right now. I-I'm sorry," she said, standing up. She threw a couple of coins on the table, then strode from the pub. feeling that unfamiliar prickling in her eyes that signalled tears.

For a moment it seemed to have worked. Rab felt Sara's lips open to his, and the way she began to melt into the kiss. He felt a quick surge of triumph, and his body responded violently, anticipating where this would lead. And then abruptly she pulled away from him, repeating her protest, her rejection of him. She was fooling herself, couldn't she see that? They were supposed to be together. It was their fate to be together. He watched helplessly, unable to string together the words to call her back, as she flung some coins down and stormed out.
Rabastan was shaking. All his passion, his desire was on the point of exploding. He got up violently, rocking the table, leaving the coins lying there. His first instinct was to go after Sara, to make her understand what he'd been trying to tell her. But he knew that if he saw her again right now, came close enough to touch her, he might lose control, do something that she would never be able to forgive - that might just land him back in Azkaban again.
He turned and stumbled blindly across the room, heading for the stairs, but as he went through the doorway, he collided with someone. Stopped short, he stared down at the woman he'd run into. She was somehow familiar, that fiery red hair, and the pale skin and crystal blue eyes.
"Who...?"

Kaiia Blackthorn gasped as someone crashed into her. Looking up, prepared to lash out at the clumsy lout, she gasped again. It was him. Rabastan Lestrange, the man who had turned up, so mysteriously, at her trial. The man who could have been her dead husband's twin.
His face was flushed, his breathing fast. She assumed he must be angry about something, then her eyes widened. Their collision had brought them into such close contact that she could feel that whatever anger he might be feeling, he was also experiencing another, much more basic response.
The idea came to her fully formed, in an instant. She was undo no illusions; this was not Damon. But perhaps his genetic imprint would be enough to give her something she'd pined for: a child that looked like Damon.
She looked up into his eyes, and smiled, running her tongue along her lips, then let her hand slide down past his belt buckle, caressing the evidence of his arousal. "It seems you're very happy to see me," she quipped.

For a moment, Rabastan couldn't believe what was happening. He'd gone in the space of a few seconds from being rejected in no uncertain terms, to being felt up by a woman he'd never spoken to before. Suddenly he remembered where he'd seen her; she'd been in the courtroom, the day he went to see Sara. He'd been too intent on Sara to pay her much attention.
He was about to shove her aside, but it seemed like a little voice inside him said Why not? She's willing. Maybe Sara will realise she does want me if she sees me with another woman...
She was certainly attractive, anyway. And the way he was feeling - helped along by her wandering hand - he needed the release.
Looking down into her eyes, he managed a smile. "Who wouldn't be?" For a moment more, he hesitated. This would be nothing more than a physical encounter, he could never feel love for any woman but Sara. But he was only human, after all, and her insistent, caressing fingers were irresistable.
"I have a room upstairs..." he said.

Kaiia smiled. "Lead the way," she said softly. She reached up, sliding a hand to his shoulder to draw him down to her height, and kissed him, hard and passionate. As their lips separated, she sighed softly. She'd been without a man for too long. This one could satisfy her immediate desires, as well as - hopefully - her long term goal. Taking his hand, she followed him, as he led her up the stairs towards his room.

Sara made her way down from the school, into the Hogs Head Pub. She really needed a drink, and also, subconsciously, she was hoping to see Rabastan again. Since they'd met here again, that night he'd kissed her, she couldn't stop thinking about him. It was causing serious damage to her relationship with Tamon. He was waiting for her to commit fully, as was their coven, waiting for their leaders to finally unite properly. But, the truth of the matter was, she just couldn't do it. Her drink came to the table, and she took a long draught from the glass, feeling the familiar burning sensation as the burning liquid went down. That would numb smething for the time being.

Rab pulled on a robe, and went downstairs to the bar. Kaiia was upstairs, and they were out of wine, so he'd come down to buy a bottle. He walked over to the bar, and asked for a bottle of red wine, then glanced up, and realized with a jolt that Sara was there, with a drink in front of her. For a moment, he felt guilty; then he remembered that she was the one who'd pushed him away. She couldn't blame him for finding himself a woman to relieve his tensions. He was wondering whether to speak to her, when the bartender came back, and said in a loud voice, "There you go, Mr Lestrange," as he banged the bottle of wine down on the counter.

Sara was at the end of her second glass, when she heard a name she was hoping to hear. But, when she looked up, she felt sick. Sh sighed and looked back down at her empty glass, her hair falling in a dark curtain around her face. She groaned, lifting a hand up to her eyes when she felt that blasted prickling again that signalled tears. For Merlin's sake! She took a few deep breaths to calm herself. He looked ass though he'd taken her words more seriously than she had hoped. Her body was shaking slightly with the effort of holding back tears. Jeez... this emotions business was annoying. But, she supposed, it was her fault. She'd told him she needed space, to let her go... She never actually thought he'd do it!

From Sara's expression, she'd realized what was going on. Rab was confused - she'd told him repeatedly that they couldn't be together. And now here she was, almost in tears because she'd realized that he'd taken her at her word. Half-exasperated, half- sympathetic, he picked up the bottle of wine and walked over to her. "Sara - you surely didn't expect me to become a monk?" he said quietly.

Sara groaned as she heard Rab's voice beside her. She looked up at him, biting her lip. "Well, I just didn't think you'd on move on so quick," she murmured. She sounded stupid, not something she particularly liked. "You should go... I'm very obviously keeping you," she said, standing up in front of him. Now she really noticed, she really wasn't that much shorter than him anymore.

Rab shrugged. "Well, it's not like it means anything. It's just physical - scratching an itch, if you will." He looked at Sara steadily. "If you really don't care, why does it bother you what I do?" he asked. "You wanted me to let go - maybe you're the one who still needs to do that." His tone was soft, cautious. He didn't want to build up his hopes again.
When Sara spoke again, he nodded. "Yes. It would be inconsiderate of me to keep... the lady waiting." He caught himself before he said her name - Kaiia had told him that she taught at Hogwarts, and it might make things awkward for her if Sara knew that one of her staff was sleeping with him.
