"Oh, he probably hasn't even noticed me." She hoped she wasn't blushing. "Yes, Desjardins. And yes, I'm a pureblood. My parents are always going on about blood lines but... well... sometimes it all seems so silly." What on earth was wrong with her today? If anyone overheard her saying that, and it got back to her parents... they'd probably pull her out of Hogwarts altogether! Trying to change the subject, she said, "Have you studied Ancient Runes before then? This will be my first year doing it."

"I'm a half blood myself, no pure blood mania for me and if you are a girl, then Zeke has noticed you." Luke laughed, surprised at himself, usually he couldn't talk in front of girls this easily. "I've never studied them in a class, but I've read a few books. My mom used to know the teacher, but she was disowned from her family so she hasn't really talked to any pure blood since."

Nathalie laughed. "Well if he has noticed me, he hasn't done anything about it!" She hesitated when he said his mom was disowned; probably it was for marrying a non-pureblood. Maybe she shouldn't ask about it. Instead, she said, "It's a new teacher, isn't it - Professor Laine? I wonder if my parents know him. They probably they do, they seem to know all the pureblood families. Of course, we're related to most of them too..." Now it sounded as if she was boasting, and she hated it when other people boasted about who they were related to. "Yes, I've read some books about runes too. I'm looking forward to taking the class. Not just learning to cast runes, but the history of it too."

"Rune casting sounds fun, it would be cool to learn about that. And to read futhark. What other classes are you taking this year?" he gestured to his large pile of homework. "As you can see, I'm taking quite a lot."

Nathalie smiled. So I see. I'm taking a lot myself this year. Let's see, Arithmancy, History of Magic, Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, Ancient Runes... Defense Against the Dark Arts. Almost the only thing I'm not taking is Muggle Studies. I wanted to but my parents absolutely forbade it. I'm afraid I know almost nothing about the muggle world." Which made it all the more fascinating to her. "Still, I suppose they can't stop me reading about it on my own time - not if they don't know about it, anyway!" She looked to see what Luke was working on. "Well at least you've started on the Potions essay, I haven't even got to that yet. What's your best subject?"

"I don't know, do you want to know about a group of boys who took of their shirts and jumped on the desks like a bunch of gorilla's?" Angel laughed as she got her Arithmancy books out. "History's alright as long as it's a subject that isn't too boring." Hearing Luke swear she looked up and then felt Aidan's hands go around her ears. "Well I did my life path number which is 8, but that's all I managed to do." "Yours is 8? Sound like you're destined for success!" He grinned. "Mine is 6. Okay, so the next step is to work out your Destiny - or Expression - number. You need to write out your full name, and then the corresponding numbers using the table in Chapter 2, and then reduce each name to a single digit, and then reduce those to a final single digit. Look, I've done mine..." He opened his notebook, and showed her how he'd worked it out:

Father discovered that a distant relative of ours is teaching it now, so he wants me to take it. I'm glad, I wanted to take it before, but Mother always said it wasn't decent for boys and girls to be in the Observatory together after dark." She giggled at Luke's expression. "I know - she has some very strange ideas." She saw his wink, and had a bad feeling that she was actually blushing. Quickly, she said, "I definitely have more fun at school than at home. Anyway, Father insisted, and he even gave me his old telescope and planisphere that he used at school." |

Yes, they want to preserve all the old traditions and attitudes - you know, stuff like blood purity and inheritance and arranged marriages. Well, Father does anyway. Mother does too, I suppose, but mostly she just wants to spoil our fun. I've got three sisters at school, and another one still at home. She's only eight. Will your sister come here eventually?" |

"Sounds boring." he laughed, "And the rest sounds medieval, has anyone had an arranged marriages since Voldemort died?" He could remember that, he had been a first year. "Yeah, in fact, she's coming soon. I don't know when exactly, but my mom decided the school wasn't worth paying the rather large tuition." Luke smiled. "You know how cheap grown ups can be."

Nathalie shrugged. "Of course they still happen. I'll have one myself in a couple of years. I don't know who, yet, but I'm sure they have a few boys in mind. And I know several other kids at Hogwarts who are betrothed." She didn't want to think about it right now. "That's good, you'll both be at the same school then." She grinned at his next comment. "Well, not really - whatever other faults my parents have, 'cheap' is not a word you'd apply to them!" Nathalie looked over at Luke's parchment. "How's the Potions essay going?"

"Hmm.. i never knew, my mom's pretty much out of it with the whole pureblood stuff these days. It sucks that they chose who you're going to marry. Do you like any of the choices they have lined up?
Uggh, it's going horribly, Zeke is good at potions, not me." he said, looking down at the half a paragraph of medium sized, neat loopy handwriting.
