This lesson will officially commence on Thursday, August 28th. In this class we will be studying the Moon. You should already have read Chapter Three of your textbook prior to the start of class.

Kaiia smiled grimly to herself as she walked into the Astronomy classroom. Her class was in for something of a shock this lesson. The set her books down on the desk, then paused, took a deep breath, and transformed into her barn owl Animagus form. She beat her wings a couple of times, flying to perch on the top of the celestial globe that stood on her desk, ruffled her feathers slightly, and settled down to wait for her students to arrive.

Isabella walked into the classroom and smiled at the owl being careful not to disturb it by making too much noise. "Hello Professor," she said simply as she took her seat and took her book out. Today's lesson was going to be interesting for she at least hadn't done her homework, which was almost never happened, and she was pretty sure no one else had either.

Mel entered the class, pulling her hair back into a bun. "Hey Bella." She smiled softyl, sitting down at a random seat. "Who would've thought....I'd be doing astronomy past my OWL's" She laughed softly and started to get her text books out.

Today's lesson was going to be interesting for she at least hadn't done her homework, which was almost never happened, and she was pretty sure no one else had either. Kaiia ruffled her feathers and hissed softly. Spending this time in her owl form would help her stay calm when she addressed the subject of last lesson's homework. There were still a few more students to come, so she settled down again, her dark eyes watching every movement in the room. ooc: Yes, barn owls really do hiss when annoyed.

Bella was just about to respond to Mel when she heard the owl hiss, making her jump. Instead she smiled at Mel before checking over everything she had read since the last lesson. Judging by the noise that the owl had made, they were definitely in for an interesting lesson.

Kaiia finally decided that it was time to start the lesson. She stretched out her wings and took flight, transforming in mid-air. She stood beside her desk, back in her human form, and looked around noting that some of the students looked startled at her sudden transformation.
"First," she said smoothly, "I must apologize." She waited a moment, as some of the students exchanged confused glances. Then she went on, "Apparently, I did not make it sufficiently clear that the homework set in the last lesson was not optional. Or perhaps," she continued, in the same biting tone of voice, as she walked slowly down the aisle between the desks, "you merely assumed that as a new teacher, the tasks I assign you need not be taken seriously?" She paced slowly back to her desk, then faced them again.
"I have decided not to deduct housepoints, as some of you appear not to care about disgracing your houses. Instead, I will require all of you to remain at the end of this class to complete and hand in the homework assignment. This is the last class of the day, so you won't be missing anything important." Her eyes sparkled with malicious amusement. "And to ensure that the concept of completing unpleasant tasks remains fresh in your minds, you will each receive detention, which you will spend cleaning the owlery floor - without magic." She paused, to let the news sink in, then said,
"I hope you have all read the chapter on the moon, in preparation for today's lesson. Though given the past record of this class, I rather doubt that you have. Miss Peters," she snapped, turning on Bella, "please explain to the class what is meant by the term 'synchronous rotation.' "

Bella bit her tounge guessing correctly that Professor Blackthorn wouldn't accept any excuses. What! she thought as she heard what their punishment was. Staying behind she could understand but cleaning the Owlery floor.Oh I'm going to look and smell horrible Her whole body sighed as she was asked the first question, but started answering it anyways. Synchronous Rotation means that the same face of the moon is always turned towards the Earth. It is the speed of rotation of the moon combined with the speed of the orbit of the moon around the Earth." She gave a small smile as she looked the professor in the eye, the homework may not have been done, but she'd definitely be getting points this lesson.

"Correct. The reading you did at the start of this lesson appears to have sunk in." She turned away, looking for her next victim. "Miss Alibrandi - define a Lunation."
When Mel didn't answer immediately, Kaiia added, "Can someone who actually read the chapter - assuming that any of you did - enlighten us?"

Caeleb watched the rest of the class squirming and shook his head with a bored grin. They were so pathetic, the way they all took this crap so seriously. He continued to doodle dark marks on the back of his text book, zoning out from the boredom of the classroom, and wondering what Dara was doing at this precise moment.

Kaiia caught the grin on Caeleb's face. "Mr Dracus," she said softly, "Perhaps you would like to share your wisdom with the class?" As she walked closer she saw what it was he was drawing on his textbook. Little fool! she thought. How obvious was he trying to make it? She pulled out her wand and erased the doodles from the textbook. "Defacing your schoolbooks, Mr Dracus? I will speak to you after class today. Now - since you clearly feel that you have no need to read your textbook, please define a Lunation."

Rose sat at the desk watching the teacher asked a slytherin what a lunation was. Rose had a small panic attack, what in the name of merlin's beard is a lunation? She knew pretty much everything else about the moon, but a lunation?

Caeleb leaned back loosely in his chair and looked at her with a slightly lopsided, bemused smile. Ohh, you're so attractive when you're cross, Professor. He thought, wondering if she could hear him. He didn't care much, either. He watched the Dark Marks disappear off his book and pursed his lips sideways, his eyes blazing with excitement at the challenge. Her concern amused him. "Sorry, Professor. I'd love to spend some extra time with you after class. I look forward to it." He said giving her one of his best charming smiles, knowing how much it would infuriate her.
"Sorry, what was the question? Lunation?" he asked with mock thoughtfulness as he tapped his forefinger against his chin. "I believe it is, in layman's terms, how long it takes the moon to complete one full cycle...but I could be wrong." he replied, looking into the distance in contemplation.

"No doubt being wrong is something you are accustomed to; but in this instance you are correct," Kaiia responded, ignoring his clumsy attempt at innuendo, and his charming smile. She'd heard about this one; but he was far too young to interest her, and besides, the only men who even remotely caught her interest were those who reminded her strongly of Damon. She looked at him for a moment longer. Did he not realize why she'd erased those Dark Marks from his book? Even the suspicion of having Death Eater sympathies could have serious consequences.
She turned away, having little patience with the boy.
As she walked back up towards the front of the classroom, she noticed the 5th Year Ravenclaw girl who had just transferred into her class. "Miss Scarlet!" she said abruptly, stopping beside her desk.
