Arithmancy Lesson Two

Glancing up at Professor Snape one last time Bella gave a small smile before working her number out. "I actually hate my name," she said softly. "It's too long."

Quickly she looked up the number in her book.

"Okay these things actually scare me sometimes," she said reading how correct it was.

Danika smirked as Kildara seemed uncomfortable. No one had ever done that, from what Danika had seen. She shrugged and started working out her Number.

She sighed. Somethings were like her. Others were not. Sometimes, she thought she could run her life by this stuff, other times, the thought it was a wrought. This was neither of those times. She was just plain confused!

Sam saw Kildara look in his direction, and didn't even want to know what that look meant. He shrugged and worked out his Number.

He frowned. The same number as Kildara. He opened his book and read the meaning to himself again.

Sam growned inwardly. Unfortunately, he thought to himself. It's all right!

Chris was struggling a bit. He understood what he was supposed to do, but he had this weird thing with numbers - sometimes they just didn't make sense. The head at his last school had told Chris's mum that it had a name - Dys-something. Not Dyslexia, but the same sort of thing except with numbers.

He'd always been really bad at maths. Then the head had talked to him, and explained why he was having so much difficulty. His brain sometimes didn't understand when it saw numbers written down. It didn't mean he was stupid, just that he needed to take his time and make sure that he was reading the numbers properly. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to do the simplest arithmetic. After that, it had been easier, he stopped worrying because he sometimes couldn't do the easy stuff, and then he'd been able to think about the methods and formulas. He even found that he enjoyed some maths, though he still had trouble sometimes, especially if he was tired.

He stared at the messy notes he'd made for his Soul Urge number, hoping he'd added it right this time:

He checked the meaning of the number:
ONE (1): You want to lead more than anything and may want to control others too. In matters of the heart and friendship, everything is great when the object of your affection/friendship lives up to your expectations. He frowned. He wasn't sure that sounded much like him.

"Are you okay Chris?" Bella asked, seeing him look puzzled. "What's wrong?" She had glanced at Sam's work and seen that it was a three.. it was definitely him. She had to admit that much.

"Well - some of this just doesn't sound like me. I mean, I don't really want to lead or control people - though the bit about not liking to take orders is true. And it says I seem cold and distant, but I don't... do I?" he finished anxiously.

"No that bit is definitely not true," Bella said honestly. "Don't worry about it Chris, my Soul Urge number wasn't like me either. But my Personality one matched me almost perfectly." She gave him a small smile. "Try working out that one and see if it's better."

Chris set to work, and eventually came up with a number.

"But - that's got cold and controlling too!" He was starting to have his doubts about Arithmancy!

Kildara walked over to Chris and sat down on the empty desk next to him. "Is there anything wrong, Mr Marquez?" she asked softly, none of her usual edge in her voice. She looked at his page. "A number eight! Interesting number. See now, Mr Marquez, you may not exhibit all of these traits at the moment, you are only young, you may never exhibit them at all. These explanations are there as a guide. For example, you may not be cold and authoritarian, but you are assertive and intelligent. Everyone should be able to find something in their explanations that fits them. If you can't, you're focussing on the wrong bits," she said, still looking at Chris, but talking to the class at large.

Nathan was scribbling his own numbers on the piece of parchment.

Nathan chuckled silently, and noticed the hard time Christopher was having, clearly the results weren't always accurate in their whole way. For instance, Nathan couldn't deny his Soul Number was right, but there were a few things on the Personality Number that didn't match.

Mel raised an eyebrow, smirking. This sounded more like Bella. Sighing she continued, having always doubted stereo-typically 'deciding' someones fate by adding together.....vowels?

Mel laughed, that sounded a little like her. Romantic, philosophical.....but reading on she realised it sounded more and more like her.

Kildara looked around the room and smiled. "Okay, you all seem to have gotten the hang of everything. That's all for this lesson. If no one has any questions, you may leave. Homework will be posted soon, so keep an eye on your House Notice Boards," she smiled, walking back to her desk and sitting on it.

Mel picked up her books slipping Professor Snape a smile. Gathering her stuff she slipped out of the classroom, "Thanks Professor" She said, softly moving out into the bustling corridor

Danika smiled and packed her things into her bag. She flashed Kildara a smile before walking out of the room.

Sam sighed and decided he was going to ask Kildara what that look was for. He leaned over and whispered to Bella. "I've got to talk to Professor Snape," before he stood up and walked over the ethereal figure sitting on her desk.
"Umm. Can I talk to you Professor?" he asked.
