Care of Magical Creatures class 1

Bella ran down to the Paddock as fast as she could knowing that whatever she did she wasn't going to be late. She had seen Krys' brother when both she and Krys had burst in on the meeting, but that was it. It wasn't a good idea to make a bad impression. She arrived just as he was going through the rules and nodded, they all sounded reasonable enough and it wasn't as if she was going to break them. Scanning who was there she spotted most of her friends and then she saw Caeleb with Kelly. This was definitley going to be awkward, especially since Kildara had found out about them.

Kelly giggled, as Simon ignored her message. "This is going to be fun" she thought. She looked at the gate, as more people arrived and sneered as Caeleb walked in. As he spoke to her, Kelly turned to him "Oi, it has been a while, since we had our last chat, Caeleb dear." She sent him a smile. When he asked her about the symbol, she winked at him "I would say never, but maybe it'll vanish, when you're finally mine." With those words, she turned her head back to the professor and gave a nod as he told the rules. She saw Bella come running in the paddock and gave her a smile, when she saw her looking at them.

Caeleb scowled as she spoke and shok his head. His eyes were on the Professor, but he lowered his voice, not looking at her as he replied.
"You really are a twisted bi*ch, aren't you Kelly? You don't seem to able to decide whether you want to kill me or f**k me. But since you're never going to be able to do either I'd be setting myself up for a disapointment if I were you." he sneered.
He gave Bella a faint smile as she entered the paddock, feeling a little bad for the way Dara had treated her earlier. But at least Dara had calmed down now. He wanted to go and talk to her, but chose not to. He didn't want to cause the girl any more trouble.

Kelly giggled "But you seem to be so fond of bi*ches, hanging around with Dara and all." She gave him a sharp look, before answering "I want everything from you and I'm not going to be disappointed so quickly." She pouted at him theatrically. Caeleb was an interesting subject and even though she wanted to kill him more than anything, she still controlled herself.

"Ok, everyone I think we'll make a start. If you'd all like to follow me, stay close together coz we're going into the forest. I don't want anyone left behind so no dawdling, please."
Simon walked back over to the gate and held it open for all the students. One everyone was through he fastened it securely shut and led the troupe down into the forest and began the short treck through thye trees to the pond where he, Liz, Kit and Emilia had had their encounter the night before.
Just as he'd hoped the herd were there waiting for them. The baby immediately wailed at them and began running towards Simon. When he saw the students he stopped dead, his little hooves scraping across the soil. He neighed uncertainly, eyeing the youths warily.
Simon stopped the class firmly with a raised hand.
"Ok, everyone stop just here for a moment, we don't want to spook them. Now as you can see, for this class we shall be studying Unicorns." he beamed at them.

Angel followed Professor Hedwig through the trees and wondered where he was going. She wasn't afraid of the forest, more like cautious than anything else. As they reached the pond she stopped in awe at the sight before her. She loved unicorns and seeing the herd was amazing. The foal was so cute it was adorable to see it running towards the professor as if greeting a friend. When he raised his hands she stopped and then listened to him, "Sir they're so... beautiful," she said finally although she wasn't sure whether beautiful was the right word to use.

Simon smiled at Angel and nodded.
"I'm glad you think so, Angel. And for that you get to help me first." he turned and dropped to his knee calling the baby over softly. It neighed at him uncertainly eyeing Caeleb nervously. He didn't like that boy. But it walked slowly upto Simon and nudged his elbow. "Angel do you want to come forward?" he asked kindly, pulling a bottle out of his bag. "Nice and slowly." he said sofly with a reassuring smile.

Angel's smile broadened as she heard she could help the Professor first. As he called to the small foal she whispered to Krysta, "Right your brother is definitely cool." How anyone could get that close to a Unicorn was beyond her, no one was supposedly meant to be able to touch them. "Umm okay," she said her confidence wavering a little. What if she did something wrong?! When she reached the foal she smiled and held her hand out gently, it was like a horse in some respects, it needed to see you weren't going to hurt it before it would trust you. "What do I need to do professor?" she asked.

Simon watched as Angel whispered something to Krysta and Krysta laughed loudly. He shook his head at her and she immediately fell silent, trying to look innocent. He grinned and then smiled as Angel gingerly appoached him and the foal. The foal watched her curiously but allowed her to reach out her hand to him He sniffed at her hand with interest and then to Simon's amazement and delight he gently licked her palm.
"Well done, Angel. He likes you. Now kneel down and take this bottle." he instructed softly, handing her the bottle of yellow-looking milk. The foal immeidately got excited and flicked his tail impatiently.

He turned to the class.
"Now Unicorns are naturally very timid animals. Our Unicorns are fairly tolerant of human presence, but usually they would never allow us to get this close. In general they prefer female company to male. Can anyone think of a good reason for that?" he asked. He wasn't looking for a text book answer, he just wanted to hear their opinions.

Bella smiled as Angel was picked to go and feed the foal. She really was a doll, and personally thought Angel deserved the small pleasure. Hearing Professor Hedwig speaking again she turned her attention back to him. After thinking for a moment she raised her hand, "Could it be because in general, women are meant to be more docile and quiet, where as men are meant to be boistrous and loud. Unicorns are gentle creatures so they prefer gentle and calm atmosphere."

Angel grinned as the unicorn foal licked her palm and knew he trusted her not to hurt him. Like I'd even dare! "Well that's a small relief," she said jokingly as she knelt onto the soft ground, taking the bottle that he gave her. She knew that the foal was expecting to be fed and with her free hand, put it around the foal's body, keeping it steady while it suckled the milk. "He's definitely strong," she giggled feeling the bottle almost yanked from her hand, though she was able to keep a firm grip on it.

Simon nodded at Bella.
"Yes, that's practically it. 2 points to Ravenclaw." he said with a smile. "Some people believe it's to do with feremones or testosterone. Others believe it's a kind of Mothering insitinct they're attracted to. But the Unicorns definitely prefer gentler, quieter people." he told them all.
"Now I'm pretty sure you all know an answer to this next question but can you tell me some of the magical properties Unicorns possess?" he asked the class.

Edwin had chosen to stick to the back of the class, keeping himself as unobtrusive as possible. He spared his new professor a mild glance at the mention of going into the forest, keeping close to his fellow students as requested. When they reached their destination, Edwin blinked slightly at the sight of what awaited them.

Movement caught his eye from the particular unicorn he'd been watching mildly, and he watched as one of the colts beelined for the Professor and came to a skidding halt. It was so close to a deja vu that he almost smiled. Instead, he merely watched impassively as another student spoke up and was called forth to help handle the young unicorn and the Professor asked the first question. Recalling what had happened at his old school when this question had been asked, Edwin chose to keep silent. At the second question, Edwin looked up. The long silence stunned him considerably; this sort of question should have been answerable by second year. Or at least, at his old school. Recalling how his old school worked its curriculum, Edwin closed his eyes and took a moment to relax before answering the question himself.

"The unicorn possesses many magical qualities, most of which are found in its horn, which is commonly used to detect and clear poison. The unicorns horn is popular in many potions, mainly antidotes and aphrodisiacs. However there are other parts of the unicorn that possess magical qualities, such as the hair from its mane and tail for wand-making...." He paused, his expression growing completely unemotional, "and its blood." The last was stated calmly, though there was an air of coldness behind the words, lurking darkly and perfectly poised to strike. The uses of the unicorns blood were well known to Edwin thanks to several classes, and they disgusted him to a point that bordered delicately upon rage. His emotionless expression made it very clear he had no wish to elaborate upon the last, but the comment itself showed that if pressed he knew the answer in spades.
