Christopher saw one of the older girls turn to look at him. She smiled, and he gave her his most angelic smile - the one that always made his Mum say he was destined to be a used-car salesman. Mum knew that when he smiled like that he was up to something, but no-one at school had caught on yet! He was keeping the spider out of sight, but this girl looked like she might be the sort who didn't like spiders.

He edged towards her, making sure she wasn't looking at him any more, and when he was close enough, he very gently put the spider on her sleeve, and waited to see what would happen.

Bella was watching the conversation around her something about different creatures they'd be learning about. It was nice to see Kelly so interested in something, though she thought it was her animagus side that had her interested in them.

All of a sudden she felt something crawling up her arm, if it had been cold she would've said goosebumps but this felt like something was actually crawling. She turned her head to look at her arm and screamed. "Get it off! Get it off , get it off GET IT OFF!" she yelled. There was a spider on her arm and it was huge, what with the legs, and the head and the eight eyes that she knew were looking at her. She hated spiders, after snakes they were the worst things on the planet.

Andrew had been half a sleep in a stupor listening to what was going on and drawing when he heard Bella start screaming. He spun around and saw the spider crawling on her arm. He stood up and took it off of her. Taking out his wand he conjured a jar and put it in there. He looked at Bella, "Are you all right, Bella?" He knew how afraid of spiders she was. He looked at the first year and scowled, "You know...you shouldn't do that to a Prefect and not when another Prefect is right in beside her. Even if you are in Gryffindor." He glanced at the professor waiting to see if he was going to take off house points because of the first years childish behavior. I would.

Bella stood still shaking slightly as Andrew put the spider in a jar and then nodded. "Yeah, I just wasn't expecting to see a huge spider on my arm when it wasn't there a minute ago." She turned to the boy and smiled at him quite sweetly, anger and fear were not a good mix with her. "What's your name?" she asked him sounding calm.

Danika jumped quite high when she heard Bella scream. She turned around and saw a huge spider on her arm. "Oh my god," she breathed, knowing Bella was even more scared of spiders than she was. When Andrew just took the spider off Bella's arm, Danika had to admit, she was impressed. She definately wouldn't have been able to do that. She smiled at him softly then looked at Bella, who looked as though she was about to faint. Although she smiled at the boy, you could see the anger beneath her eyes. Bella never got mad, Danika didn't know how she could do it.

Christopher howled with laughter. The response was even better than he'd hoped. He watched as the older boy removed the spider, and wasn't particularly discouraged by the way he was scowling. He had to have some fun, didn't he? He wasn't sure whether prefects could give out punishments - probably they could, but you usually had to put up with some punishments if you wanted the fun.

He saw several other people giving him dirty looks, though the girl he'd put the spider on was smiling at him, so surely he couldn't be in that much trouble. He gave her an innocent smile in return.

"I'm sorry - I didn't know you were scared of spiders. I think they're really cool. I wanted to bring my pet tarantula to school, but they said it wasn't allowed."

Isabella took a few deep breathes through her nose and out of her mouth, cooling her temper immediately. "It's okay, you just have to remember that some people don't like the same creatures that you do," she said softly. She knew that smile, it was the exact same smile her brother used to use on their mum when he was blaming her for something. "Isabella Peters," she said holding out her hand.

"I'm Christopher Marquez," he said with a grin, shaking her hand. "I like all kinds of bugs and animals. Did the teacher say we're going to learn about crups? What's a crup - I never heard of that before? Does it have lots of legs?"

"Nice to meet you," Bella replied, mentally storing the name into her head. There was no way she'd be forgetting that name or that face anytime soon. "A little note, I'm the type of girl that does not like bugs unless they're butterflies or stuff like that." She shook her head and laughed, "No, crups are basically like a type of dog which is called a Jack Russel. The only difference between the two is that Crups have forked tails and they hate muggles. Plus they'll eat almost anything you give them."

"Okay, I'll remember."

Christopher's face fell slightly when she described crups. "Why would they hate muggles? Do they hate muggle-borns too?" He hoped not. Apart from that, they sounded really cool.

Andrew looked at the boy and frowned sitting down in his seat again. He looked at the spider in the jar and caught a glimpse of Danika smiling at him. He smiled back slightly with a shrug. Spiders didn't bother him..now snakes... He stopped the thought before it could take root. He picked up his quill and started drawing, listening to Bella talk to the boy and knowing that she was taking notes. He smirked.

"No they don't hate muggle borns because muggle borns are technically wizards and witches," Bella replied. She could tell that Chris was getting into the idea of Crups. "Just remember if you're muggle born that you won't be able to have one as a pet, not while you live at home anyway," she said gently. She glanced at both Danika and Andrew and gave them both a smile, she wasn't over the spider, but she was going to see if she could calm Chris down, even if it was only just a bit.

"I don't think Mum wants me to have any more pets, anyway. Even though my cousin's looking after mine while I'm at school. As well as my tarantula, I've got a chameleon, and some tree frogs, and a tortoise. And for my last birthday I got a scarlet king snake. Are there any magical snakes around here? I only just found out I'm a wizard, and none of my family knows anything about magic either." Chris finally paused for breath. He was surprised to find it was much more interesting talking to the older students than making them scream!

"Wow, you really seem to like creatures," Bella said noting that most of them were either reptilians, amphibians, or arachnids. "Um snakes?" she repeated, looking over at Andrew. "The only snake that's magical is a basilisk, although the only known basilisk that I've heard of is dead. It lived in the chamber of secrets but was killed by Harry Potter in his second year. Harry Potter by the way is a hero among the wizarding world, it's a long story and I'll tell you later about that and about magic if you promise no more tricks for a while."

"Oh, wow! Like a war hero, you mean?" The witch who'd come to explain to his mum and dad when he got his letter had mentioned something about a war, but since his birthday was right at the end of August, there hadn't been much time to learn about wizard history. There was a history textbook, but he'd been too interested in the Potions and spell books to look at it.

"Okay, I won't play tricks!" He knew it was an extravagant promise, so he amended - "Well - not on you. Maybe just a few little ones on the teachers sometimes?" He grinned impishly. Outside lessons, there was a lot of fun he could get into without playing tricks on people. Come to think of it, in lessons he had plenty of scope too - magic was just so much fun!
