Please take a seat. Class will begin on October 15 (okay, so it's a day late...)
NOTE: You still have time to complete homework assignment 2. Anyone who is signed up for Astronomy is expected to hand it in - even if you signed up AFTER the last lesson (OOC: I did warn you guys about that in the class announcement.)
You have just over 12 hours until the deadline of Oct 14 at 11.59 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5)
I will be deducting housepoints from everyone who does not submit the homework.

Caeleb entered the classroom and nodded respectfully to Professor Blackthorn. He had done well on his homework and she had given him good marks. He hoped perhaps the bad start they gotten off to could be remedied. "Good morning Professor." he said curtly. "I was wondering, Professor, if you could explain the answer to the question I got wrong on my homework. I admit I didn't fully understand it." he confessed.

Kaiia looked up at Caeleb walked into class. She remembered their last encounter - they'd both been furious. But at the same time, Caeleb's vehement defense of his loyalty had gained him a measure of her respect. She had come to the conclusion that his lapse had been merely the result of youthful misjudgement, rather than any willful recklessness.
"Good morning, Mr Dracus. Let me see..." she glanced at the parchment he was holding, then nodded. "Ah yes - here, you see, you stated that the moon rises five minutes later each day. The correct answer is that it rises approximately fifty minutes later each day. Apart from that, your answer was correct."

Caeleb grinned and smacked his forehead. "Sorry, Professor. I must have misead it." he replied sheepishly. He smiled and nodded, taking out his textbook and reread the passage. "Oh yeah...that makes more sense now." he added with a grin. He began reading through the next chapter of the book, hoping to familiarise himself with what was to come in the next lesson.

Bella walked into the classroom and sat down dreading the lesson. She'd done the homework, but this would be the first lesson that Sam would see Caeleb and that wasn't a good mixture. Seeing Caeleb already there she sighed, but gave him a smile. She had to be nice to him, even if Sam didn't want her to, they were both prefects. "Hello Professor," she said with a small smile as she took her seat, saving the other spot for Sam.

Caeleb looked up as Bella came in and he smiled. "Hi Bella, how are you? I haven't seen much of you this term." he commented in a friendly manner. Sure she was always srronded by people he couldn't stand but he'd kind of had the impression she'd been avoiding him a bit. Not that he blamed her. "I heard you got engaged." he added, his smile slipping ever so slightly. It reappeared a moment later. "Congratulations." he said warmly.

Bella had to smile apparently he hadn't heard about what had happened, but she'd tell him later. "I'm alright thanks. How are you? I think we've both been busy," she replied shrugging her shoulders with a grin. "Prefect duties, love lifes..." drama regarding love lifes She really had to get a grip on her emotions she was beginning to feel bad for not talking to him. At least he had been kind to her. "Thanks," she said enjoying the warmth of his voice. It was nice of him to offer his congratulations even though he probably didnt' like Sam at all. "Caeleb... Kildara told Sam about us," she said trying to find the right words before Sam actually came in. "I've told him not to try and fight you, although you'd probably do fine in a duel, but I just wanted to let you know in case he did try. I'd rather not be the cause of an arguement."

Caeleb shrugged and smiled to show it was ok. The had both been really busy recently, and it wasn't like he expected her to make time for him. Why should she? His smile suddenly dropped as she told him about Sam. A dark flame flared in the torrent. Why would Dara do that? Was she really that jealous? He thought he'd gotten through to her. He shook his head. "It's not your fault." he growled. He pursed his lips together hard in anger. "Don't worry about Sam. If he starts anything I won't fight him. I promise you." he swore, not meeting her eyes. He shook his head slowly to himself. Dara could only have had one reason to do this: to hurt Bella. He finally looked up at her. "Are you and Sam ok? You haven't broken up or anything?" he asked, hoping Dara's motives hadn't been met.

Bella saw his smile drop from his face and knew that he wasn't happy either. "Caeleb?" she asked warily knowing that his temper wasn't one to mess with either. "I know and it's not yours either," she said her tone hardening a bit. She knew exactly who's fault it was but she didn't really want to go blame Kildara in front of both Caeleb and the professor. Hearing him promise made her feel slightly better but knew that if Sam actually hurt him, Caeleb probably would retaliate anyways. "We're alright," she said nodding in answer to his question. "I'm not sure if he trusts me 100% at the moment, but we haven't broken up. My friendship with Andrew has though but at least I've still got Sam."

Kaiia stood up, and faced the class. Once silence had fallen, she said, "Well, it seems that at least some of you heeded my warning last lesson. The students who completed and handed in their homework will each receive housepoints for their work. The following students who did not do their homework will each lose five housepoints." She picked up a piece of parchment, and read the list of names. "Nathaniel Asthore, Rose Scarlet, Anastasia Willson, Luke Carter, Jazmyn Harper, Megan O'Reilly, Alexander Ashstone, Michelle Ashstone, Verity Vaisy, Amanda Lesalle, Andrew McDougal." She paused and looked at the students. "Those students will also report to the owlery on Saturday morning at 8 am. It needs cleaning again." She put the list down, and flicked her wand at the blackboard. The following words appeared, in Kaiia's handwriting: Tides Formation of the Solar System "As I recall, we did not have time to cover the action of the moon on tides. Can someone please explain briefly how the moon causes tides on Earth?"

Jennifer tentitavly raised her hand. "Umm. Something to do with gravitational pull?" she said, rather uncertainly. She'd only just read it. But, since coming here, her memory was shot!

Kaiia nodded. "Yes, gravitational pull. Can anyone expand on the explanation?" Her eyes swept the room, and landed on the two boys about halfway down the room. The Fischer twins. She'd be keeping a close eye on those two, she thought grimly.

Angel thought for a moment and then raised her hand. "The moon and the earth are attracted to each other. The Earth's gravity allows it to hold onto almost everything except water becasue it's always moving. So the moon's gravitational pull causes the sea levels to rise and fall, giving us tides. It happens everywhere there's water except the Mediterrainian sea." She was glad she didn't have to go clean teh owlery tonight that was certain.

"A very good explanation. Two house points. Although it's not quite accurate to say that the Mediterranean has no tides. Like all large inland bodies of water, including, for example, the Great Lakes in North America, it is affected by the moon's pull, but to a much lesser degree. The change in water level is in the range of centimetres, rather than metres as you find with the oceans. So the average person will usually not notice the change in water level." Kaiia used her wand to display a series of images showing the tides during a full lunation.
"As you can see, there are two main types of tide. Spring and Neap. What is the difference between the two?"

"Spring tides are really strong tides that occur during a full moon and a new moon when the sun, earth and moon are in line with each other," Bella said remembering what she had written on her homework. "Neap tides are weak tides that occur during quarter moons when the sun and moon are at quarter angles."
